We believe that there are major differences between home automation and smart homes. Home automation (KNX) have been used for years and smart homes have only been possible for a couple of years.
The difference between KNX and smart systems is that smart systems are completely customized as per the client. These systems become smarter when they all work together.
- Design: Our systems are programmed to our clients’ needs, we start with a consultation to see what our client wants. This design process includes a thorough walk-through on the menu of smart options, budget discussion, timeline for execution followed by a walk-through of our model site. We show our clients the full extent of how their home could act and react with these systems installed. The client is given many options to choose from such as; a remote battery-operated switch for their lights or regular wall switches etc..
- Installation: Based on the agreed upon schedule, installation could be done in stages or at once. No additional major wiring is needed as in KNX systems. This reduces heat dissipation in clients homes and reduces the fire risks associated with having a bulk of wiring around the house. Our sensors are battery operated and last 3-5 years before the battery needs to be changed. Existing fire systems become smart fire systems without any changes to the fire systems or additional wiring. Wire-free Water leak systems could also be installed. With these two smart systems, the client is notified if there’s a water leak or fire in their house.
- Programming: Clients are usually new to systems of such, they don’t know exactly what they want. Initial programming is done but this could change afterwards. After the client tries their new home, they could want certain things to happen differently, the door to lock after 20 minutes instead of 10 minutes, the curtains to open at 7 am instead of 8am, or the TV to start on another channel etc.. We will do the necessary changes until the client feels and sees how beneficial it is to have a smart home. The concept isn’t just about controlling our homes with a mobile phone or with a voice command. It’s the things and devices that work and think together without the client necessarily telling each device to act in a certain way. After a while the client would see how their home has become easy to use, safer in terms of fire and water leaks, and safer in terms of security and access control.
- For example, the client is walking back home, a certain programmed scenario is triggered, the AC sets to a specific temperature, the TV turns on and sets to a specific channel, the ventilation system turns on, the curtains open, the water heater starts working and so on. These preset commands could be triggered based on location, a voice command or a touch of a button.
- Another protocol could happen as the client leaves the house; the music switches off, sockets switch off, the TV switches off and the curtains close etc..
- Another scenario would be when the client wants a certain protocol to be triggered with a voice command like ‘movie time’, with this command, the curtains close, the lights dim or change colors, the TV opens Netflix and the AC sets to 19 degrees
- Aftercare: The systems are installed, what’s next? Our systems come with one-year warranty, one-year service and three programming visits for the client to request modifications to their systems. Any manufacturing defects found in priority products which cannot be fixed on site will be replaced. If the exact same product cannot be found, an equal or better product will be provided. The one-year service covers troubleshooting the system for any errors that could occur from the manufacturers side. After the year is done, service contracts would be readily available.
Here’s a sample of what we could do:
- A Security system with door sensors, window sensors, motion sensors and cameras could be installed where the client would receive an alert if a door or a window is opened, check the sensors’ history later, arm/disarm (with a pin code) with the clients’ voice, mobile phone or a control panel.
- A smart access control system could be installed, the client would then be able to; open the door with normal keys or with a mobile phone, give access to anyone with a simple text, restrict access at any time or any place, receive alerts when specific family members enter or leave the house, or even have the door lock automatically after a few minutes.
- A smart doorbell could be installed, clients and their family members can receive a notification when the doorbell rings, communicate with the guest, unlock the door to let them in, receive notifications in any room from the voice assistant saying ‘someone is at the front door’.
- Smart Lighting systems could be installed where they could be controlled with a phone, a regular switch or with the clients’ voice. The motion sensors could be programmed to switch off certain lights when the client moves around his house. For example; assuming the client is in their living room, the lights in their bedroom would switch off.
- A robot vacuum could be installed where it could be programmed to start when the client leaves the house, at certain times every day, with a voice command or a from their phone and receive notification when the job is done. The areas that were cleaned would be mapped and from that, the client can know which areas the vacuum reached or didn’t reach.
- Smart sockets could be installed where not only could they be controlled from anywhere, energy consumption could be monitored. Know which appliances are faulty or inefficient and driving the electricity bill upwards. The energy consumption could be used to know exactly how much each appliance is costing per month.
- Multi room music sound systems could be used, what’s different? Everything. Play music from Spotify or Apple Music in each room using a mobile phone or with a voice command. Have the speakers switch off when the doorbell rings. Play music in every room or in select rooms and have the lights sync with the music. Music can automatically play at a predefined trigger, such as entering or leaving the house
- A smart gate or garage control could be installed. A protocol could be put in motion in case a fire alarm is triggered; the front gate would open allowing first responders easier access to the house. Control the gates from anywhere at anytime with a mobile phone or a voice command, or even have the gates open and close automatically at certain times.
- Smart thermostats could be installed on existing cooling units. Other than the added benefit of mobile and voice control, certain protocols could be added. Such as; having the HVAC units turn off if there’s a fire, turn on while walking back home or turn off upon leaving.
- Smart entertainment systems are used to control the TV, Apple TV, receiver, sound systems and any other AV entertainment device. Our smart system is programmed based on the devices our clients have. All the remotes could be programmed into one easy-to-use universal remote with a touch screen.
Overwhelming? Definitely! We try to narrow down the options based on the client, their routines and their interests. Clients can start small and upgrade their systems. Our systems are made to accommodate clients of all ages at the same time, so no matter what age group you and your family belong in, whether you are tech savvy or not, you can still control your home easily with regular switches, your phone or your voice.
